Every now and then, there comes a book that yanks you off your chair and leaves you reeling with a mixed bag of emotions.
“The kind worth killing” by Peter Swanson is one such book. No other book has explored the revenge and payback genre as well as this.
The meet
Ted, a successful and rich businessman, meets the eccentric and beautiful girl, Lily Kitner at an airport lounge while waiting for their flight.
They had this extremely bizarre alcohol-infused conversation where Ted casually mentions his cheating wife and how he feels like killing her.
Lily is super psyched by this and she agrees to help him to kill his wife. Ted is also pretty shaken by this new development and he assigns it to the alcohol they have had.
Ted naturally assumes they will both be laughing it out the next morning once the alcohol ears off!
Just before departing, Lily asks Ted if he was serious about killing his wife, and Ted is still hungover to respond. Lily, then asks Ted to meet her 1 week from now if he is serious.
Something about Lily bothers Ted, her conviction and the calm with which she agreed to help kill his wife was still perplexing.
Unwittingly enough, he meets her a week after and they both are surprised to see each other turn up.
The plan
Thus starts the exhilarating and perilous journey of Ted and Lily. They plan meticulously to kill Ted’s wife and figure out ways to get away with it!
Does Ted’s wife find out?
Is the guy, Ted’s wife is cheating with, have any stake in this high-octane suspense thriller.
Does Ted’s wife have her own game?
Whatever it is that you are assuming, you will be surprised and blown by how the book suddenly changes track and picks up breakneck speeds.

Narrative
The narrative oscillates between various characters such as Ted, Lily, Ted’s wife.
A couple of chapters are also dedicated to the guy, Ted’s wife is cheating with.
This gives the author enough time to develop the backstories of individual characters and that also adds a lot of depth and complexity to the plot.
There are also brief flashes of stories from older timelines such as the childhood of Lily and Ted’s wife.
These backstories further enhance the story.
Prose
The novel is written in plain and simple English, and I loved the way the author ‘Peter Swanson‘ takes a dig at poetry by having one of the characters write some extremely hilarious poetic lines.
Overall the novel is elegant and well written.
Closing remarks
This is definitely a must-read for people who love psychological thrillers and suspense thrillers. This could also loosely qualify as a murder mystery.
Basically, anybody who liked fast paces novels will love it, definitely not for the faint-hearted!
Cup Of Reviews would rate the book: 82/100
