Love Hard movie review

Natalie Bauer is a LA based journalist who is popular for writing the dating column “Disaster Dating”. Not a surprise, she has a really disastrous dating life. But, the worse her dating story, the better it is for her column. Yet, she hopes to find her one true love. She meets her dates through an online dating app called FlirtAlert. Her friend Kerry asks her to widen her search in order to find the man for her. So, Natalie changes her app settings and comes across the really cute and handsome, Josh Lin. Josh lives in New York.

They start texting and eventually start spend hours talking on the phone. She runs some tests to ensure that he actually does exists. They really hit it off.

Surprise! 🙀

One day, Josh casually says that he wished he could be with her for Christmas. Thats when Natalie decides to fly down to New York to surprise him. She flies 3000 miles only to realise she has been catfished. Josh is a bespectacled introvert who lives with his parents and works at his father’s sports goods stores. He is far from the photo on the app. Josh had actually used his former best friend Tag’s photos to find himself some matches on the dating app.

The Silver Lining

Natalie runs away from his place and goes into a bar. And that’s where she runs into the real Josh aka Tag. Tag is an hardcore adventurous guy and Natalie and him have absolutely nothing in common. But, on the brighter side, Josh knew Tag and was willing to set her up with him.

Seal the Deal 🤝🏻

To make up for his mistake, Josh decides to set Natalie up with Tag. They strike a deal as per which Josh would help Natalie become the kind of girl that Tag would fall for. He is aware of Tag’s interests and he literally trains her into it. And in return, she would pretend to be his girlfriend in front of his parents until Christmas.

The delightful chemistry 🥰

The dynamic between Josh and Natalie is really heartwarming and delightful. It is a treat to watch them together. He actually gets her and so does she. They have far more in common than they could have imagined. They push each other to become better versions of themselves. The pair would really melt your heart.

Haters Gonna Hate

People may not agree with all parts of the plot. Like, how could they not have spoken over video call ever? And then, how do you hop on a plane to surprise him? Or, how can you trust and share a room with someone who romantically conned you?

But to me, all this was just the movie plot. She really had started to fall for him. So, she may have trusted him enough to share a room or fly down to meet him without caring to even see him on call. All in all, they didn’t seem like loopholes to me and was just the premise of the movie.

Closing Remarks

The plot is a series of borrowed plots from different movies, stitched together. It is absolutely predictable and completely cliched. But despite all the loopholes and the cliches, it is an adorable movie that you can snuggle up to. The dialogues will make you laugh and also warm your heart.

The movie answers the age-old question, “Is physical appearance more important than personal connection?”

Josh played by Jimmy O. Yang is really charming, funny and a complete goofball. All the characters played their parts to the T.

The movie is entertaining overall with a simple and easy message and definitely hits the mark! 🙂

“Honey, sometimes blow-ups can be a good thing. You might not always get the ending that you want, but you’ll get the ending that you need.”
